The Employment Court has confirmed the core principles to follow in situations where employers are seeking to end an employment relationship on medical grounds. In Lyttleton Port Company v Arthurs 2018, Mr Arthurs was an employee cargo handler of the company. He suffered PTSD as a result of witnessing a fatal workplace accident in 2008 and then having a friend and colleague become involved in a second fatal workplace accident in 2014. He took sick leave in December 2014 using a series of medical certificates, and during this time suffered a non-workplace shoulder injury. In July 2015, medical information from his doctor as well as a further medical specialist evaluation obtained by the company indicated no clear recovery time and the possibility that he might never recover. In December 2015 the company terminated his employment on the basis of medical incapacity and unlikelihood of a return to work in the foreseeable future.

Crisis management is a critical consideration in most organisations. By definition, a crisis in this sense is anything that may threaten operations and have a negative outcome if not addressed appropriately.
Failure to do so has almost instant dire consequences - reputational damage, harm to stake holders and plunging share prices. In the long term, a serious case of crisis mismanagement could end an organisation's existence.

Green's Domestic Violence - Victim’s Protection Bill 2016 is coming up for a third Parliamentary reading.
The aim of this Bill is to amend the Domestic Violence Act 1995, Employment Relations Act 2000, Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, Holidays Act 2003, and Human Rights Act 1993 to enhance legal protections for victims of domestic violence.

Under the Gambling (Harm Prevention and Minimisation) Regulations 2004 the holder of a class 4 venue licence must make available to players pamphlets providing information about the odds of winning on gaming machines, information about the characteristics of problem gambling and how to seek advice for problem gambling. In addition to this the venue must display signage that is clearly visible to all players that encourages players to gamble only at levels they can afford and contains advice about how to seek assistance for problem gambling.

The Problem Gambling Foundation (PGF), Mapu Maia, Asian Family Services, and several community partners are inviting clubs to participate in a nationwide ‘Pause the Pokies’ campaign as part of this important awareness raising week. This involves venues turning off their pokie machines for one hour during GHAW to increase community awareness of gambling harm.
