Each time an Interclub Magazine is released, we are inundated with calls and emails from member clubs who are rightly concerned that they do not feature within the "club listing".

The Interclub Magazine is produced by an independent publisher and Clubs New Zealand has no editorial jurisdiction.

Future proof your QR Codes for Reciprocal Rights

It is great to see that some clubs have been getting ahead of the curve by adding a QR code to their plastic membership cards.  To be compatible with the future reciprocal rights system, this QR code should include your Clubs New Zealand club number followed by the members number.

Do not be too hasty in amending your constitutions

3 June 2021

Many clubs that we have spoken too are gearing up to make amendments to their constitutions in preparation for the Incorporated Societies Bill being passed into law.  While we applaud the enthusiasm, we would advise clubs to hold off making any amendments at this time.

The bill has yet to pass the select committee phase and still has to make its was through the second reading, committee of whole House and third reading before it will be given Royal Assent.  During these phases things can change and we have possible regulations to take into consideration.  You don't want to be adopting amendments only to have to go and change them again 12 months later.

Sick Leave Increasing

Labour's Bill to double employer-funded sick leave for employees, has passed the third reading in Parliament this month.

The Bill is supposed to come into force 2 months from enactment which makes for a mid July date.

Protecting our privileges

The below update from ClubsNSW CEO, Josh Landis was published in the May issue of ClubLIFE Magazine.

Over the last year, clubs have become masters of the 'pivot'.  Constant changes in health guidelines meant clubs would receive advice from ClubsNSW in the evening, brief their staff in the morning, update their COVID-19 safety plans and be implementing completely new processes by lunchtime.  Club managers who used to say "that can't be done" have got on and done it.

Is your constitution, really your constitution?

With the Incorporated Societies Bill working its way through the legislative process, all clubs are going to need to review their constitutions in the near future.  Clubs New Zealand's recommendation is that during the transitional period, clubs use the opportunity to modernise, streamline and ensure that the clubs constitution is a fit-for-purpose set of rules.

The first step in this review process, will be to ensure that the constitution you have in front of you, is in fact the constitution that is registered with the Incorporated Societies Office.

Its about to get easier to sign up to the Clubs New Zealand Mobile App

Over the last few months Clubs New Zealand has been working alongside Paperkite (our app developers) to further develop the Clubs New Zealand app, streamline the sign in/sign up process and improve the apps messaging capabilities.  We are in the final stages of this development and hope to release the updated app shortly.

Clubs New Zealand Submission on the Incorporated Societies Bill

You will all be aware that public submissions are now being called for the Incorporated Societies Bill.  The bill proposes to put in place a modern framework of basic legal, governance, and accountability obligations for incorporated societies and those who run them. 

The proposed bill is of significance to the Club Industry and far more in depth than the current 1908 Act.

Are your employment agreements up to date following the minimum wage increase?

12 May 2021

As you will all know the adult minimum wage in New Zealand increased to $20.00 per hour on 1 April, 2021.  As a result of this we expect many clubs have had to adjust pay rates for employees.  

If you have changed an employees hourly wage or salary it is important that you update the individual employment agreement to reflect this.

Clubs New Zealand Complaint to the Commerce Commission re SKY

5 May 2021

Last week Clubs New Zealand submitted a complaint to the Commerce Commission regarding the increasing costs of SKY Television subscriptions for commercial premises.

In the complaint it is argued that the anti-competitive and monopolistic behaviour demonstrated by SKY Television warrants an investigation by the Commission.
