In the age of Google and Wikipedia there is a growing view that information and answers should be able to do everything ourselves.

We are all guilty of it, the other day my dishwasher filled with water and, rather than find someone who fixed dishwashers for a living, I Googled to see if I could fix it myself. The short version is: my kitchen flooded.

We all know a club's constitution is one of the most important documents a club has. It is effectively the contract between a club, its committee and the members. A constitution should be an up-to-date working document and will often be the first port of call in working out how to resolve an issue with members.

Employment Relations Amendment Bill

The anticipated changes to employment law have now been presented as a Bill to the House. The new Government claiming this will "restore fairness and balance into New Zealand workplaces". With the discussion that took place following the election it is no surprise to see the main thrust of the proposed change is to strengthen the position and bargaining power of unions, reduce flexibility in agreements with regard to rest breaks and pay scales, limit the operation of the 90-day trial period and require reinstatement as the primary remedy in personal grievance matters.

Keep an eye out for the new Area Update Emails

This year the Clubs New Zealand Board and National Office will be starting to send out Area Update emails via the Clubs New Zealand MailChimp system. These Area Update emails will look quite similar to the Club Industry e-Newsletter and will typically contain information on area meetings and will obviously be sent only to the applicable area.

By using our MailChimp system to send out Area Updates we will be able to monitor if emails are being received and consolidate the boards individual email address books down to one which will help to ensure the right information is getting to the right people.

More Mystery Shoppers on the way to Class 4 Venues

For those of you with Class 4 Gaming Machines you will be well aware that the Department has carried out Mystery Shopper Exercises first in 2014 (non-club venues only) and then again in 2016 (included club venues). The goal for the Department of Internal Affairs is now to introduce a rolling mystery shopper campaign, which much like a CPO would mean on any day at any time someone in your venue could be putting you to the test.

Club Licence holders beware

17 January 2018

Once again, we would like clubs to take the time to review your practices, procedures and rules to ensure that you are complying with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, particularly in relation to Section 60. We are aware that the Police are intending to increase their monitoring of clubs in the Wellington area and there is absolutely no reason to believe that this will not be the case elsewhere. The Police are quoted as saying “Ignorance of the Act is no longer an excuse and clubs must be prepared to face enforcement action if they are discovered operating outside the conditions of their licence or in breach of the Act.”
