About the South Taranaki Club

Situated in the heart of Hāwera, the South Taranaki Club is a modern and progressive community club that has proudly served the district since 1912.  With a strong membership base, quality hospitality offerings, gaming facilities, entertainment, sports sections, and a welcoming atmosphere, the Club continues to evolve while maintaining its strong community focus.

As we look to the future, we are seeking an experienced and proactive Club Manager / Secretary to lead the organisation, drive operational excellence, and support the ongoing growth and success of the Club.

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership position responsible for the overall management and day-to-day operations of the Club.  Reporting directly to the Executive Committee, you will provide strategic leadership while ensuring the Club operates efficiently, remains financially sustainable, and continues to deliver an exceptional experience for members and guests.

This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference by leading a dedicated team, strengthening community connections, and helping shape the future direction of the South Taranaki Club.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all day-to-day Club operations, ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation.
  • Manage the Club's financial performance, including budgeting, cashflow, reporting, stock control, and financial administration.
  • Lead, support, and develop staff across all areas of the Club.
  • Manage human resource functions including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, training, and staff wellbeing.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, including gaming regulations, liquor licensing requirements, food control plans, employment legislation, and health and safety obligations.
  • Maintain effective systems for administration, record keeping, and cash management.
  • Provide regular reporting, advice, and recommendations to the Executive Committee.
  • Develop and implement marketing, promotional, and membership growth initiatives.
  • Foster strong relationships with members, staff, adjuncts, suppliers, contractors, and the wider community.
  • Oversee property maintenance, security, and capital projects.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and the long-term sustainability and growth of the Club.
  • Maintain high standards of customer service and member experience.
  • Be prepared to adopt a hands-on approach across all areas of Club operations including bar service, member functions, and special events as required. 

About You

The successful candidate will be a motivated, hands-on leader with strong business acumen and the ability to balance operational management with strategic oversight.

Ideally, you will possess:

  • Proven management experience, preferably within hospitality, clubs, gaming, or a similar environment.
  • Strong financial management, budgeting, and reporting skills.
  • Experience leading teams and managing people effectively.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and relationship management skills.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships with staff, members, and the Executive Committee.
  • Sound knowledge of employment relations, health and safety, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Experience in marketing, promotions, and membership growth initiatives.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications, Xero Accounts and Payroll and business systems.
  • A modern, forward-thinking approach and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A relevant qualification in business, management, hospitality, or finance would be advantageous.
