At the most recent Annual General Meeting of Clubs New Zealand a brief discussion was held regarding future conferences and concerns regarding member engagement and participation. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a steady decline in both delegate and club attendance at our annual Conference, AGM & EXPO, with delegate numbers down 30% and club participation down 20%. At our most recent AGM, we only just achieved quorum.
This event is a cornerstone for our association, it’s where we come together to learn, connect, and shape the direction of our collective future. But it’s clear that the landscape is shifting, and we need your help to understand how we can adapt and ensure this event remains valuable, relevant, and accessible.
While we can’t reduce the registration fee, at $400 it already sits well below the cost to run the event and is significantly lower than comparable industry gatherings, we want to make sure we’re delivering maximum value. We also know that travel and accommodation costs are a concern and while we have no influence over airline pricing, we continue to negotiate preferred accommodation rates wherever we can.
We understand that the days of sending a full committee to conference are behind us. But we’re eager to learn how we can support and encourage clubs to send at least one or two delegates, ensuring your club is part of the conversation.
Some have asked whether virtual options could help. While there are certainly benefits to accessibility, we are cautious, the networking, connection, and catching up around the leaner are often cited as the most valuable parts of the experience, and we don't want to lose that.
