Circular 25-071

Clubs New Zealand is deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of Past President and Life Member Tom Fisher, whose contribution, leadership, and unwavering passion for clubs leaves a legacy that will endure for generations.

A memorial service for Tom was held on 11 September, bringing together a large gathering of Tom's family, friends and the club community past and present to honour a man who gave more than 40 years of dedicated service to the club movement.

A Lifetime of Service

Tom's journey began when he joined the Matamata Club in 1969. Within a short time, he was elected to the committee, later serving as Vice President and President (1978-80). In 1976, he became Area Delegate for South Waikato and Bay of Plenty, marking the start of a national leadership journey that would span decades.

Tom was elected Vice President of Chartered Clubs Inc. in 1994 and served as President from 1999-2003. At the 2003 Conference in Whanganui, he retired from the role and was made a life member of the Association.

At the request of members, Tom returned to the Presidency in 2010 at the AGM in Napier, continuing to lead until his retirement following the 2016 Conference in Upper Hutt.

A Leader Through Change

Tom guided Clubs New Zealand through periods of immense change, from liquor law reforms in the late 1980s and 1990s, to gaming and employment legislation reviews, to the cultural shift of opening club doors to women in the 1970s. He was also instrumental in establishing the Clubs New Zealand Sports Council, ensuring fairness and judicial oversight across our sporting codes.

During his presidencies, Tom championed growth, strengthen ties with Clubs Australia, and constantly reminded committees that their role extended beyond meetings, it was about understanding and meeting the needs of members, whether social, sporting, or simply providing companionship.

Tom was known for his straight-talking style, his generosity with time, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. As he often said, "Once you walk through that club door, you're only one thing - a member."

He never shied away from hard conversations but always believed in listening, including, and encouraging others to step up. Tom was revered at Area Meetings, respected by club leaders nationwide, and beloved by members who valued his warmth and humour.

A Shared Journey

Tom’s service was always supported by his wife, Dulcie, whose patience and encouragement underpinned his decades of dedication. Tom never missed an opportunity to acknowledge that he “couldn’t have done it without her.” Together, they exemplified what it means to serve the club movement selflessly.

Our Thanks

Clubs New Zealand, its Board, National Office, and member clubs across the country extend their heartfelt condolences to Dulcie, Tom’s family, and friends. We give thanks for Tom’s extraordinary contribution and service.
