Clubs New Zealand membership connects clubs across the country and allows members of affiliated clubs to visit other member clubs while travelling.

These are know as reciprocal visiting rights.

Reciprocal visiting rights are not automatic and are not a guaranteed right of entry. They exist within the framework of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 and each club's licence conditions and rules.

What are reciprocal visiting rights?

Reciprocal visiting rights allow a member of one financial Clubs New Zealand member club to visit another Clubs New Zealand member club and, if permitted by that club, be treated as a reciprocal visitor.

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, clubs may only sell or supply alcohol to:

  • Their own members
  • Guests of their members
  • Reciprocal visitors who are members of another Clubs New Zealand member club

Because of this, clubs must be able to identify who is authorised to be on the premises and who alcohol may be sold or supplied to.

Important things member need to know

Reciprocal visiting rights are a privilege, not an entitlement

When visiting another club:

  • You must be able to prove you are a current member of your own club.
  • Your club must be a financial member of Clubs New Zealand.
  • You must carry proof of membership.
  • The club you are visiting may have its own entry requirements, dress standards or house rules.
  • Clubs always retain the right to refuse entry.

If you visit another club frequently, that club may require you to apply for membership.

Bringing guests to another club

Under the law, reciprocal visitors cannot automatically bring guests.

Unless a club has a specific condition on its licence:

  • A person who is not a member of any club and is invited by a reciprocal visitor cannot be sold or supplied alcohol.
  • This means you may not be able to invite non-member guests when visiting another club.

If in doubt, check with the club before you visit.

Behaviour and compliance

While visiting another club, you are expected to:

  • Follow that club's rules and by-laws
  • Respect staff and members.
  • Comply with all legal requirements.

Failure to do so may result in refusal of entry, removal from the premises, or in serious cases, withdrawal of reciprocal visiting rights for an individual or a club.
