Matariki Public Holiday - 24 June 2022

12 May 2022

The Government has created a new public holiday by passing the Te Ture mō te Hararei Tūmatanui o Te Kāhui o Matariki / Te Kāhui o Matariki Public Holiday Act.

The first public holiday to celebrate Matariki will be on Friday 24 June 2022.

Like all other public holidays, Matariki will attract holiday entitlements depending on whether the day is an otherwise working day for the employee.

We have created a simple flow chart to help you determine employee entitlements for Matariki

Matariki will be observed on the day it falls, this means the holiday will not be subject to Mondayisation.  The date for Matariki will vary from year to year, however, it will always fall on either a Friday or a Monday.
