Sale of Liquor Act Update

The Law Commission tabled its report "Alcohol in Our Lives" on 27th April 2009. This report has been received by the Minister of Justice who is presently reviewing the report and its recommendations. Clubs New Zealand carried out a comprehensive review of the 590 page Law Commissions Report and drafted a summary report of its findings and recommendations.

There are currently three other Sale of Liquor Bills before the government. They are at various stages within the parliamentary process.

The Minister stated in his last speech on the Sale of Liquor Act in September 2009 "It has become increasingly clear to me that New Zealand urgently needs to take a wholesale look at the Sale of Liquor Act. I will take some convincing that the Act should not be rewritten." The Minister went on to say that he will reform the liquor laws once and will do it properly.

Therefore Clubs New Zealand takes the view that while we will be mindful of the potential impact of Mr Palmer's report, if accepted, it is prudent that we wait until the process is formally adopted and is agreed to, to ensure Clubs New Zealand voice is prepared and heard in the right forum.

A sub-committee of Clubs New Zealand is currently working on the issues that potentially affect the members of Clubs New Zealand and will prepare and consult before a final representation is made on the member's behalf.

This includes continuing with their meetings with various ministers of parliament and club executives before a final and comprehensive submission is lodged.
