Butter Increases 63% - Food update from MenuCoster

Butter increases 63% Dec 2009 - 2010

Annual changes show increases for all categories: fruit and vegetables (up 5.5%), dry goods (up 4.9%), restaurant meals (up 4%), meat, poultry, and fish (up 3.2%), and non-alcoholic beverages (up 1.8%). Milk prices increased by more than 14% which also had a great impact on butter price which rose significantly by almost 63%.

Although there was a 4.2% increase of food prices in the year to December 2010, in November and December 2010 prices started to fall by 0.6% and 0.8% respectively.

Food prices decrease 0.8%

In December 2010 Statistics NZ reported food prices decreased by 0.8% compared to November.

The biggest decreases were soft drinks (down 5.8%), lettuce (down 19.6%), and tomatoes (down 37.1%).

The most significant increases were for for apples (up 14.2%), chocolate bars (up 10.5%), and sausages (up 8.7%).

Overall, in December 2010, fruit and vegetables prices decreased by 4%, non-alcoholic beverages fell 2.7%, and dry good prices dropped by 0.4%, while meat, poultry and fish prices increased by 0.8%.
